::I'm Not Alone::

Humans, I believe, are playful by nature. Those who manage to suppress this nature are the ones who become 'successful' in the modern world. Think dream job, dream car, dream home...etc. How so? They spent their time gaining sufficient knowledge or skills to ensure future monetary prospects. Almost everything they dream of comes true. In this world, only a minority fit in this category.

Then there are the people who are constantly caught in a dilemma between work and play (the ordinary citizen). Even those at the top are plagued by such problems. Yet, their efforts in almost suppressing such a dilemma is commendable. Okay, so the majority of people fit here, most letting their lives swayed by the rather random motion of work and play. I call it 'seeking balance'. For example, after a day's work, you would most likely drop by the bar with your colleagues to get a drink or two or play pool. (Well, I even saw working men in their thirties drop by the local lan shop to play DOTA after work till midnight!!!!)On the other hand, those at the top either stay in their workplace to work or go home to his/her studyroom and think of the next project to work on.

There are also those who are constantly at play, with minimal work. They are disruptive in school, terrorise the teachers, regard smoking or drugs as social norm and indulge in wherever their interests lies most of the time. In Singapore, such persons await Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and the weekends for the day they strike it rich with 4D, Toto and Big Sweep. Well, it almost never happens. Even if it does happen, they have no sense of financial planning and land back at square one soon enough. If they did calculate the amount of time spent waiting which could have been used to find employment, the earnings could well exceed the amount won.

Half a decade ago or longer, play is regarded as activities that reap nothing in return. As you age, it is higly discouraged. Nowadays, the distinction between work and play is blurring. Play can be considered a form of work. Yes, it is an integral part of work now in fact. I see it as a complement, something that work should never miss out if possible. Yet many in the working world still view 'play'in a negative light, especially the older generation. With the advent of computers, the arena of computer/video gaming is a raging debate of meaningless play and beneficial play. Many companies disallowed the playing of computer games in the office. Then there are the gaming companies that play computer games, or young gamers who participate in world competitions. We can see the gaming industry taking shape in the monetary world. That's play in work isn't it.
